Three Things – 29/07/24

Lego female athlete in the olympics

Ready, steady, GO!

As the Olympics begin, one can only marvel at the dedication and expertise of the athletes, particularly the solo track and field disciplines, where people have given so much of their lives to so specific an activity.

Expertise at work can be similarly hard-earned – the “10,000 hours” concept suggesting that mastery only comes after many years of effort. However, in today’s world, Generative AI (GenAI) can make anyone appear highly knowledgeable on any subject—a powerful but risky tool if used without proper understanding. Here are three essential tips for using AI responsibly, especially when venturing outside your comfort zone.

#1. Know your limits

Just as athletes train to excel in specific events, it’s crucial to recognise your limitations when using AI. Avoid relying on AI for tasks you are entirely unfamiliar with. Use AI to enhance your understanding, not replace it. If you’re learning, use AI to complement your existing knowledge, ensuring you grasp the basics first.

#2. Verify sources and methodology

AI can be incredibly persuasive, but it’s vital to check the validity of the information it provides. Most modern LLMs now include sources or explanations of their reasoning process. Always review these details to ensure accuracy, especially when dealing with data or producing content in areas where you’re not an expert.

#3. Cross check with multiple sources

To avoid relying on potentially flawed AI output, use multiple sources for validation. This can include running the same query through different LLMs or revisiting the conversation with a critical eye. Some advanced AI setups perform this verification automatically, but you can easily set it up manually as well.

As access to knowledge becomes increasingly democratised, the real skill lies in how we wield this power. In a world where AI can make us all seem like experts, the differentiator will be our ability to use these tools wisely, verifying and understanding the information they provide. Just like the Olympic athletes, dedication to mastering our tools and knowledge will set us apart.
